Jan was a regular tutor and guest reader at Ty Newydd from the very early years of the centre. She was an inspirational teacher and many writers credit her guidance and support at a crucial stage of their development for their subsequent success. Jan was incapable of flattery and her honesty, intelligence and supreme competence in advising writers on a way forward or a way to improve a piece of writing was without parallel. We know that Ty Newydd was very important to Jan and she believed in its ability to nurture young or up-and-coming talent. So much so that in 2004, when Ty Newydd faced closure because of lack of funds to match grants for essential renovation and refurbishment, Jan suggested and spearheaded an appeal whereby for a whole season writers tutored at Ty Newydd and donated their fees to the centre. Enough money was raised, the work took place and a new Ty Newydd opened in March 2006. We owe Jan a great deal. A bursary fund in her memory therefore seems a fitting way to remember her and to celebrate her work. Bursary recipients will be selected by a panel and will be unpublished but considered to have a writing talent that would benefit from a course at Ty Newydd.

We aim to raise £10,000 which will be invested and the interest generated will finance an annual bursary for a writer to attend the Writing for Children course at Ty Newydd.
