FICTION Creating convincing fictional worlds for teenagers and adults
September 29 - October 4 • Mary Hoffman and Celia Rees
Guest: Marcus Sedgwick
Residential: £480 (single) £420 (shared)
Whether writing realism, historical fiction or fantasy, the writer has to find ways of creating plots, characters and settings that are credible to the reader - and the more improbable the story, the more important this is. The tutors will look at ways of ensuring that fiction has the depth and richness to convince the reader of the reality of the world created to tell that story.
There is no obligation to submit work to the tutors beforehand, but should people wish to do so, they should send a brief synopsis of their work in progress (if working on a novel), and the first chapter, (2,500 – 3000 words). If not working on a novel, then any piece of writing not exceeding 3,000 words would be acceptable. Feedback will be given in the first tutorial sessions.
