POETRY AND PROSE: HEARTLANDS
August 13 - 18 Nigel Jenkins
and Sarah Kennedy
Guest: Samantha Wynne Rhydderch

This course will focus on emotional landscapes, both interior and exterior, and how writers render them into engaging, accessible language without resorting to cliché or sentimentality. People and relationships—between family members, lovers, spouses, for just a few examples—and how to write about them effectively will be at the centre of this course, as we negotiate the difficult terrain of creatively expressing emotion. We will discuss issues of integrity, honesty, fairness (to oneself and to others), as well as the line(s) between autobiography and other forms of creative writing: poetry, fiction, and “creative non-fiction.” We will also attend to formal matters: narrative and lyric modes; metaphor as a method of discovery; tensions between the line and the sentence.
