WRITING FOR RADIO

Have you every tried writing short pieces – fiction, short stories, monologues, and non-fiction, nature pieces, travel writing, memoir, specifically for radio? If you love the intimacy of radio, that voice in your ear, telling you tales and encouraging you to imagine the scene, but have never known how the script should be written then this course is for you. Patricia Duncker is the author of five novels and two collections of short fiction and will be there to help you with your writing. Kate McAll, who is a producer for the Afternoon Reading on Radio 4, can help participants tailor their work specifically for this slot, and every participant will have the opportunity to hear their work read professionally at the end of the week.

Everyone is asked to send a piece of writing in advance to develop during the week. (Max 500 words).

Bursaries (for short story writers)
There are two full bursaries (£450 each) available for this course.
If you wish to apply please send (by post or email) a short story (or a sample of your writing that you think would be suitable for radio) and a bursary application form to Tŷ Newydd with your contact details and clearly marked with your name and “Writing for Radio Bursary Application”. The closing date is April 7th.

PATRICIA DUNCKER has published four novels, Hallucinating Foucault (1996), James Miranda Barry (1999), The Deadly Space Between (2002), Miss Webster and Chérif, (Bloomsbury, 2006), and two collections of short fiction, Monsieur Shoushana's Lemon Trees (1997) and Seven Tales of Sex and Death (2003), all of which have been widely translated. Her next novel is The Strange Case of the Composer and His Judge (Bloomsbury, March 2010). She is Professor of Contemporary Literature at the University of Manchester.

KATE McALL is an experienced and award-winning producer of drama, readings and features for Radio 3, Radio 4 and Radio Wales.  She is currently Senior Radio Drama Producer at BBC Wales based in Cardiff.
