THE SPEAKING EYE: POETRY AND VISUAL ART FULL
August 16-21 • Pascale Petit and George Szirtes
Guest: Philip Gross
Residential: £450 (shared)
Painting and poetry are reckoned sister arts, but there is also sculpture, photography and film. We cannot help responding to works of art: they conjure feelings and thoughts from us exactly as natural objects and events in real life do. But how do we respond? Poets are shapers of language not simply describers of things. They make events in words. So poems begin in one place but move on their various journeys. What kind of journeys can poems make when their starting point is a work of art? Can we respond, not just to the subject of a piece of art, but understand the art itself as we do so?
This course will use various forms of visual art as stimuli for writing and as occasion for discussion. Postcards, photographs, small objects all welcome. Students are encouraged to bring a few samples that may be shared with others for the duration of the course.
