THE HABIT OF ART - UPDATE

A unique opportunity for writers in Wales

Tŷ Newydd in partnership with the National Theatre (London) and Venue Cymru

ONLY 9 PLACES AVAILABLE FOR THIS VERY SPECIAL COURSE

Writers from Wales are invited to join a new play writing project, run in conjunction with the National Theatre tour of Alan Bennett’s new play The Habit of Art.

Artists from the National Theatre, London, will work with you for an online feedback session, a residential weekend and a rehearsal day to help you to write a 10 minute piece of theatre. The pieces will be rehearsed for a read performance in front of an invited audience at Venue Cymru during the run of The Habit of Art.

Cost: £175 (includes a ticket to see The Habit of Art )

THE PROJECT

The project is inspired by Alan Bennett’s new play in which he creates an imagined meeting in later life of the poet, WH Auden and his once friend and collaborator, composer Benjamin Britten.  Therefore, we are asking for a piece of theatre that is a meeting of two people.  These can be real, imagined, from history, current.  You will have access to a cast of 3 actors.

THE COURSE

Stage 1
Online  (13th August – 24th September)
Clare Slater, Assistant Literary Manager, and other members of the National Theatre, London, will give you feedback on your script via email to allow you the opportunity to work on a second draft before the residential weekend.

Stage 2
Intensive, residential weekend at Tŷ Newydd, National Writers' Centre for Wales (24th – 26th September). www.tynewydd.org
The 9 writers who are on the course will work with Kaite O’Reilly, writer, and Clare Slater, National Theatre Assistant Literary Manager, all weekend, to develop a rehearsal draft.  There will be a mixture of skills based workshops, exploration, one-to-one sessions, feedback and time to write.

(This course will start with the evening meal on the Friday at 7pm and finish after lunch on Sunday. A detailed schedule will be sent nearer the time. All food and accommodation is included in the price of this project.)

Stage 3
Rehearsal and read performance at Venue Cymru, Llandudno  (Saturday 16 October).
Scripts will be rehearsed with National Theatre directors and actors.  These will then be performed as a rehearsed reading in front of an invited audience at Venue Cymru later in the afternoon.

There will then be a break before the 7.30pm performance of The Habit of Art.

TO APPLY

Please send a 10 minute (approximately) script to :Artscripts@nationaltheatre.org.uk before 6pm on 8th August with your name address and contact details.

The piece ideally should be a scene of a meeting of two people; they can be imagined, real, from history, contemporary, famous or not.  If you do not have time to write the above scene before the deadline and you have a play that you have already written that you would like us to see, then feel free to send a 10 minute extract of that instead.
The National Theatre will contact you to let you know if you have a place on the project on 13th August.

Please note:

All successful applicants must be able to attend the residential course at Tŷ Newydd, September 24th – 26th, and the day workshop and performance at Venue Cymru on 16 October.

This course is highly subsidised and supported generously by The Dorset Foundation.
